Digital Room Correction - Revisited

April 13th, 2008 · No Comments

So I reinstalled a computer (running linux of course) into my car this weekend. I had been using for a bit in the car, messing around with BruteFIR to do time alignment, correct phase and correct frequency response (highly detailed EQ). The result was good and bad. The lower frequencies were greatly improved, while the highs / mids still suffered. Some issues I believe were related to my measurement techniques and being new to the whole DRC - BruteFIR scene.

I decided to spend some more time on this and started out a bit simpler this time. I generated linear phase crossovers to separate the subwoofer from the mid / highs and am using it just for this purpose. Wow! I mean… WOW! The Rockford Fosgate amps I’m currently using have a horrible 2nd order Butterworth crossover (12db/octave) and were really mudding everything up, while reducing the power handling of the fronts, and causing localization on the sub (I could even hear some vocals through it). No more! The fronts are way crisper and punchier and can handle a much higher volume before shaking the door panels too much. The sub is way cleaner as well. I don’t know how else to describe it.

Next steps include swapping the sub’s amp with a Sundown SAX-100.2 @ 4Ohms bridged. The sub itself is a Soundsplinter rli-8, in high demand these days since they are out of production. The amp is coming in this week and I already have the tweeters.
