Pulse-width Modulated Yeast Starter Stir Plate

August 7th, 2008 · No Comments

A fellow homebrewer and member of the Worts showed me his awesome stir plate last night at a club meeting. The device uses a computer fan driven by a PWM circuit like this one based on the 555 controller. On the fan are mounted some magnets which then turn a stir bar inside an erlenmeyer flask. This lets you continually aerate and stir a yeast starter for maximum yeast growth.

So I picked up a project box at the Rat Shack and some other components. Maybe I’ll make one this weekend. Fun! I’ll take pics and document it under the beer section of the site.
