I have one of the basic bullet smokers (for bbq) that I picked up at Home Depot for around $35 or so. It turns out there is a set of basic mods that can be done.

As I think you may be able to discern, there are people who take their smoked meat very seriously. While I now use a New Braunfels Black Diamond (NBBD) offset smoker, the bullet smoker is a classic and in the right hands can make very good bbq.
Another mod that I recommend, which will make it look like R2D2 smoking a pipe, is to add a smokestack to it. We used a dremel and cut a hole in the top lid towards the side, and rolled up some aluminum flashing and jammed it in there. The smokestack serves to create a draw on the air and pull it through. The convection really helps to keep a smaller, leaner fire burning hotter, rather than a larger smoldering fire. This will help you in your fight against creosote, which in a choked-down smoker can really ruin bbq.
Here is a picture of the Bullet my friends and I modded last year. Notice the thermometers at the height of each grill, plus the chimney / smokestack.
